“How often should we blog?” is one of the most common questions small businesses ask. The honest answer is: as often as you can publish genuinely useful posts, consistently. For most small businesses, that means somewhere between two and eight posts a month.
Consistency beats volume
Publishing twenty posts one month and nothing for the next six does less than two good posts every month. Regular publishing gives Google fresh reasons to visit your site, builds a library of answers for customers, and keeps your website active. Choose a pace you can sustain for a year.
A sensible starting point
- Local service businesses: 2–4 posts a month answering the questions customers ask before they hire you.
- Online stores: 4 posts a month, such as buying guides, comparisons and how-to articles linked to product categories.
- Competitive national markets: 4–8 posts a month, plus regular updates to existing articles.
Quality matters more than word count
Google’s guidance is to write helpful, people-first content. A post should answer one question properly, show real experience or expertise, and link to the next step, such as your service page. Long posts are not automatically better; a clear 700-word answer can beat a padded 2,000-word one.
What to write about
- Questions customers ask you on the phone, by email or in person.
- Costs and pricing, such as “how much does X cost in the UK”.
- Comparisons, such as option A vs option B.
- How-to guides related to your products or services.
- Local or seasonal topics your customers care about.
- Case studies showing real problems you solved.
Do not forget old posts
Updating an older article that is slipping in Google, with new information, a better title and internal links, is often a quicker win than writing something new. Aim to refresh your best older posts every six to twelve months.
How to measure results
Use Google Search Console to see which posts get impressions and clicks, and Google Analytics to see whether readers go on to your service pages or contact form. Expect results to build over three to six months rather than overnight.
What about AI-written content?
AI tools can help with research and outlines, but publishing large amounts of unchecked AI text can hurt your site’s quality and reputation. Every post should be checked and edited by someone who knows the subject.
