Google Ads can put your business at the top of Google today, in front of people actively searching for what you sell. It can also burn through a budget quickly if it is set up badly. Here is how small businesses can use it sensibly.
How Google Ads works
You choose keywords and set a budget. When someone searches for those keywords, Google runs an auction to decide which ads appear, based on your bid and how relevant and useful your ad and landing page are. You usually pay only when someone clicks.
How much should you spend?
There is no minimum, but your budget needs to buy enough clicks to learn what works. Start by estimating:
- Cost per click in your market (Google’s Keyword Planner gives ranges).
- Conversion rate, the share of visitors who enquire or buy (often a few percent).
- Value of a customer to your business.
If clicks cost £3 and 1 in 20 visitors enquires, each enquiry costs around £60 before management fees. Many small businesses start somewhere between a few hundred and a thousand pounds a month and adjust from there.
Set up conversion tracking first
Without tracking, you cannot tell which keywords and ads bring enquiries. Track form submissions, phone calls, WhatsApp clicks and online purchases before spending serious money.
Common mistakes that waste money
- Using broad keywords without negative keywords, so ads show for irrelevant searches.
- Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of a focused landing page.
- Targeting too wide an area or showing ads at times you cannot answer the phone.
- Relying on automatic recommendations without checking them.
- Setting up a campaign and never optimising it.
Landing pages matter
A landing page that matches the search, explains the offer clearly and makes it easy to get in touch can double the number of enquiries from the same budget.
Google Ads or SEO?
They work best together. Ads bring results now and show which keywords convert; SEO builds traffic that does not stop when the budget does.
How long until it works?
Ads can bring clicks on day one, but campaigns usually need four to six weeks of data and adjustments before they settle into a reliable cost per lead.
