There is no single perfect number of posts, but there is a simple rule: post consistently, on the platforms your customers use, with content worth stopping for. Here is a practical starting point for small businesses.
Suggested posting frequency
| Platform | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| 3–5 posts a week | |
| 3–5 posts a week, plus stories | |
| 2–3 posts a week | |
| TikTok | 3–5 short videos a week if you have the capacity |
These are starting points, not rules. If you can only manage two good posts a week, that is better than daily posts that look rushed.
Choose fewer platforms and do them well
Most small businesses get better results from one or two platforms done properly than from being everywhere. Consumer and local businesses usually do best on Facebook and Instagram; business-to-business services on LinkedIn.
What to post
- Your work: photos, before-and-after results and behind the scenes
- Helpful tips and answers to common questions
- Customer reviews and case studies (with permission)
- Offers, launches and seasonal reminders
- Your team and the people behind the business
Plan a month at a time
A simple monthly content calendar saves time and keeps your brand consistent. Batch-create posts in one session and schedule them, then spend a few minutes each day replying to comments and messages.
Measure what matters
Look beyond likes. Check reach, saves, shares, profile visits, link clicks and, most importantly, enquiries. Repeat the types of post that bring results and drop the ones that do not.
When to use paid social
Organic reach is limited on most platforms. If you need results quickly, a modest ad budget behind your best posts or a targeted campaign can reach far more of the right people.
